Susanna Fritscher

Air, light and time

Expo event

From June 23 to October 8, 2017

"Nur mit Luft, mit Licht und mit Zeit" (Only with air, light and time)

To mark its reopening, the Musée d'arts de Nantes chose Susanna Fritscher to create a dialogue with the monumental space of the Patio. Working precisely with architecture and light, the artist proposes an installation that magnifies the site and offers the public a unique sensory experience.

When technique is successful, it's because you can't see it!

    Susanna Fritscher

This in situ installation is first and foremost a technical feat, involving a perilous 15-metre-high hanging in the museum's Patio and the assembly, over a period of almost 4 weeks, of 350 km of wires (the equivalent of 44,000 threads).

  • The exhibition

The Musée d'arts de Nantes has entrusted artist Susanna Fritscher with this very first exhibition entitled Air, Light and Time.

This proposal revives the in situ installations in the Patio, which have contributed to the museum's reputation in the field of contemporary art since the 1990s. Susanna Fritscher's work, produced especially for the occasion, can also be seen from the small galleries on the second floor, offering unexpected perspectives.

For this project, the artist experimented with a new material: ultra-thin silicone thread suspended from the glass roof over the entire height of the Patio. These sections of translucent thread catch the light and vibrate slightly with the flow of air and the passage of visitors. Susanna Fritscher imagines a work that invades the entire space, emphasizing and radiating it. Visitors are invited to enter and move around, letting themselves be captured.

This sensitive experience continues with the sculptures installed at the corners of the corridors, where we can "hear" the air circulating according to the speed of rotation of the Plexiglas tubes, and also through the crystal Souffles, which materialize the flow of air between ourselves and the outside world through an impalpable membrane. Through this proposition, air becomes visible, palpable and audible, and our perception of space is turned upside down. The work of Susanna Fritscher (born in Vienna in 1960, lives and works in Montreuil) aims to renew the perception of certain spaces, through works that interact with architecture. The artist is known for her minimal, aerial interventions that engage in dialogue with the space they occupy.

Susanna Fritscher's earliest works are based on painting on various supports (glass, Plexiglas, plastic film, mirrored surfaces) or directly on the wall. White, in all its variations, was initially a radical choice, to which the artist remains faithful today. Installations, sound pieces, sculptures and drawings reveal a sensitive body of work that plays with transparency, color and light.

In recent years, her installations have offered an immersive setting in which the relationship with the viewer has become an increasingly significant element of tension. She likes to experiment with uncharted territory: new techniques, cutting-edge materials and technologies. The months of upstream studio work and the many trials required to achieve the desired result remain hidden from the eye of the viewer, who is simply invited to enjoy what he sees.
