The Soul of the Forest

May 19, 2021 to September 18, 2022

View of the exhibition

Long considered untouched by civilization, the forest has occupied the human imagination since time immemorial. The Enlightenment and Romanticism made it the wilderness par excellence, inhabited by wild beasts such as the wolf, but also a refuge from the perverts of civilization. It even became an open-air studio for artists, as in Fontainebleau from the 19th century onwards.

Fascinating and mysterious, the forest is by nature ambivalent. From myths to fantasy literature, via fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, it is omnipresent. An environment conducive to encounters with the supernatural, like the Celtic spirits in Soulof the Forest New window by Edgard Maxence, the forest also symbolizes the subconscious, the encounter with oneself, and the passage from childhood to adulthood.

Works selected from the collections of the Musée d'arts, from the 17th to the 21st centuries, explore the wealth of symbolism associated with the forest. It remains a privileged and constantly renewed source of inspiration for artists, whether in painting, sculpture - as with Giuseppe Penone, who works directly with trees - or even video (David Claerbout, Le Moment).

L'Âme de la forêt invites you to explore this "forest of symbols", evoked by Charles Baudelaire in his poem Correspondances, in the heart of an evocative scenography, video by Bastien Capela(www.bastiencapela.fr Nouvelle fenêtre) and sound by Christophe Sartori.
